Dear Patrick, What hasn't been stressed enough on this list is that the kernel hackers are having problems getting their code completely bug-free and standard compliant when it comes APIC, ACPI & APM. The advice to try solving problems by turning one or more of these subsystems off isn't saying "You should not use XXX" but instead they are saying "The code in XXX is still not completely working and debugged". I have 2 SMP machines with SCSI (one is Adaptec) and following tha advice yielded 2 perfectly working systems (within reason). Good Luck.............. To summarize the issue, when using this kernel, the system totally hangs when loading both new or old version of the aic7xxx module. This forces you to use the manual install on an IDE drive. The only solution found by then to access the SCSI drives was to compile my own kernel.
I wonder if this has been somehow solved since October of last year and if the 8.2 version doesn't have that issue anymore.
I've used several models of Adaptec scsi adapters, including one that does Ultra160. Most of the time it's been problems related to the ACPI code, not the aic7xxx driver. Have you tried the fail safe boot options? have you tried passing the boot option "acpi=oldboot"?

So do I.. And the entire system runs off of it. Drives, CD-rom, DVD, and tape.
Try adding apm=off and acpi=off to the book parameters. I did, and it works quite nicely..

Strange... Are we all talking about the version 8.1 (seems I forgot to mention it)?
Turning off APM seems a bit too radical for me to "solve" this issue.
Turning off ACPI is still a work around but I think I did try it and some people in the links I gave mention they have done that. Is it possible to disable it at installation time? I will try this right now and come back with the results.
