Dear All, I have been trying to configure and get my Siemens SpeedStream cardbus PC card model SS 1021. This card is supposed to work in Linux although not officially supported by Siemens. From what I have found through my research it uses the orinoco driver. There are some instructions deep inside the SpeedStream website for Linux provided as an example that read like this: Installing PCMCIA on Linux/UNIX Systems * Overview The following information is provided as a courtesy. We do not support the use of our products on Linux or Unix systems. * Solution Example only: Configuring for Linux Orinoco Driver § SpeedStream Product: 1021 § OS: Linux 2.4.18 § Driver: PCMCIA-3.1.33+. The latest version can be found at sourceforge.net (see link in Further Information section). In this example the [CONFIG_PCMCIA] is not enabled in the kernel; instead the PCMCIA-3.1.33 suite is used. 1. Confirm that the Linux kernel was compiled with option [CONFIG_NET_WIRELESS] enabled. 2. Confirm the Wireless Tools package is installed (this is included in Redhat Linux 7.2+). 3. Append following to the [/etc/pcmcia/config] file: card "SpeedStream Wireless PCMCIA" manfid 0x02ac, 0x0002 bind "orinoco_cs" 4. Make sure you let the PCMCIA package use its own network scripts during installation. 5. Include the following information in your [/etc/pcmcia/wireless.opts] file: *,*,*,00:30:F1:*) INFO="SpeedStream WLAN" ESSID="[provide your network name here]" MODE="Managed" KEY="[if you use encryption, provide your key here]" I am an extreme newbie when it comes to networking and especially wireless networking. I have read and studied through as much of the wireless info as I can. I followed many directions and still it is not working . I am sure once I configure this correctly it shall work. I used the pcmcia that was provided with Suse 8 which is not the same version as above but is version 3.1.31-107.. Should I install the latest version of the pcmcia and if so do I need to uninstall the old version first? What files do I need to configure for this card? I have wireless tools installed although I am not sure how to use them. I have followed many directions however they do not all give the same instructions. There seem to be so many files to configure and it is not clear to me how to exactly configure some of them. If anyone can help me through this I will appreciate it greatly. This card is on my compaq laptop presario 1700T with 40 gigs of harddrive and 320 + megs of ram. I know the card works because I use it with Windows 2000 on the same laptop. I would prefer to use it in my Linux. My accesspoint/router is the SpeedStream 2624 wireless. The router seems to be working very well. My Suse Linux Suse8 on my desktop which is wired into the wireless SpeedStream works well with the router. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Marcia
