-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Beta testing has closed. It went very well and it was determined that the last series of the test were unneeded due to the fact that the last beta went so well. It has some new features, and has the new things such as X4.3, kde3.1 and a few others integrated. From my personal experience I found 8.2 to be a combination of the previous two releases with more polish and refinements. YaST seems to be better integrated and little more comprehensive. The new kernel has more drivers (actually quite a few more) and IMHO is also a more polished kerenl. Furthermore, IIRC there are some features in the kernal the might be from 2.5 that were in a stable state before the freeze (I would need to check this to be certain). The kernel has new "user" space stuff - like frequency scaling (new to the best of my knowledge - Im sure if its not someone will correct me). I also see now mobile processor mods, speedstep mods, transmeta mods, two parameters for mem support - mine says 4GB High mem support and 3GB user address space size, and other things like mapping drivers for chip access appears to be extend. You'll probably want to check out the changelog to see any diffs. Nvidia drivers are still somewhat of a pain in the ass, but what's new. I do think that Nvidia will be releasing an installer, but I have yet to see anything on their site - I do keep my eyes open though. Like I told another, It's not like fireworks go off in you back yard and a flock of blondes with beers and brats will show up at your door, but it's a nice upgrade IMHO. I personally will have no hesitation about opening my wallet to buy 8.2 - but then that's just me. Undoubtedly, there will be those that will think the new version is great and those that may be less than enthusiastic about it. I can only give my personal opinion. I guess it depends upon one's expectations and needs. Cheers, Curtis :) On Thursday 13 March 2003 21:18 pm, Paul Alfille wrote:
Where can I get 8.2? It isn't advertised on http://www.suse.com and my local stores usually take a while.
Actually, I must admit, after enduring 50 "Suse 8.2 announced" messages, all about nothing interesting, I'm not even sure I want 8.2.
