Please help with a big problem. I have installed SuSE Linux 8.1 and DOSEMU 1.0.2.0 (which came with SuSE 8.1) on my PC (Athlon 1.4Ghz, 256MB RAM, plenty of hard disk space); and need to run a DOS app that uses the external 56K modem on the second serial port (Com2), with a speed of 38400. The system is now dual-boot with Windows ME and WinLinux (which boots from floppy) in the non-SuSE partition. The modem works OK with Kinternet, and the YAST hardware information says it's set to /dev/ttyS1 (to which /dev/modem is symlinked). The app runs fine on the same machine under plain Dos, in a Windows Dos-box, and under DOSEMU in WinLinux with dosemu.conf set to include the line $_com2 = "/dev/modem" # e.g. "/dev/modem" or "/dev/ttyS1" and no other com ports set in dosemu.conf. But it won't work under SuSE--can't find the modem. So the problem is somewhere in my Suse settings. I have tried each of the following in dosemu.conf: $_com2 = "/dev/ttyS1" # e.g. "/dev/modem" or "/dev/ttyS1" $_com2 = "/dev/modem" # e.g. "/dev/modem" or "/dev/ttyS1" $_com2 = "/dev/cua1" # e.g. "/dev/modem" or "/dev/ttyS1" SI run from DOSEMU recognizes there's a serial port, but my DOS apps can't find it. I have tried the following: (i) Running DOSEMU as root (ii) Setting permissions for /dev/ttyS1 so that it's accessible by ordinary user (surely undesirable except as a test) (iii) Configuring the DOS app to use IRQs and interrupt for Com, Com3, Com4 rather than Com2 (iv) Testing the port with MS-Kermit, using all 4 port settings (Com1-Ccom4), and a full range of speeds from 9600 up (v) Adding an explicit port setting $_ports = "0x2f8" # list of portnumbers such as "0x1ce 0x1cf 0x238" to dosemu.conf None of these tests can find the modem. Any suggestions? SuSE install support can't help. I have to run this DOS app daily, and I want to stop having to boot into Windows regularly. Hoping someone can suggest something...
