One thing I had trouble with was the kernel pcmcia drivers. As soon as I switched to the external ones, there was no problem.
To do so, go to /etc/sysconfig, and edit the pcmcia file. The first entry (i think) is PCMCIA_SYSTEM. try setting that to external. See if this helps any.
