Anybody have an idea as to why my external USB hard drive (WD 80GB, USB2.0 compatible) would be really slow with transferring files to it? I'm running SuSE 7.3 with 2.4.16 kernel (from ftp.suse.com) on a Thinkpad T30 notebook. It's not USB 2 compatible, but the drive works with it still. FYI, I'm getting an average of 50-60KB/sec transfer rate. What should I be getting if it were working correctly? Thanks.

------------------------- Greg, The specs for USB1 are 12Mbps transfer speed, so it sounds like you are doing ok USB1 transfer speeds. The drive is apparently able to work on either, but of course USB2 would give you the best results. USB2 is capable of 480Mbps speed, although it's unlikely you will get full speed at anytime. Plus, a kernel update would probably benefit you greatly for USB devices as the later kernels, better supported USB and USB2. A 2.4.19 kernel would help you quite a bit I would say. It won't give you new blazing speeds, but it will help the USB work better for you all around. Remember the specs are megabits, not megabytes! I don't remember how to convert those to your KB per second reading, maybe someone else here can give you that.
