What about good old find? lightening fast on any *nix...
find may be lightening fast but the reason for using locate (if possible) is quite clear from the following listing taken on my desktop (1 495 083 files): # time find / -name 123 ... real 20m59.124s user 0m8.300s sys 0m22.120s # time locate 123 ... real 0m3.650s user 0m3.200s sys 0m0.030s 21 minutes and heavily loaded disk subsystem versus 4 seconds and minimal disk load. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
