I'm new to SuSE and to Linux in general and am having a problem with my 7.3 installation - I can't manage to compile anything from source. I have made sure to install all the "Development" packages from CD, but whenever I try ./configure or make (as per instructions), I get errors about files not being found. The one that surprises me most is a complaint about gnomeConf.sh not being found - apparently, this should be installed with Gnome but I can't find it anywhere.
I've tried searching the web but to no avail. Can anyone give me a pointer?
As a general rule, when you're missing a file you can use the file in the root of CD1, the DVD, or the ftp install directory called ARCHIVES.gz. Just do zgrep file_youre_looking_for ARCHIVES.gz In the case of gnomeConf.sh this gives zgrep gnomeConf.sh ARCHIVES.gz ./CD4/suse/gnm4/gnome-libs-devel-1.4.1.4-90.i386.rpm: -rw-r--r-- root root 970 Mar 25 22:00 /opt/gnome/lib/gnomeConf.sh So the rpm in question is gnome-libs-devel and is on CD4. When you compile programs that use rpm foo you generally need foo-devel. regards Anders -- `When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'
