Hi The sound configuration can be very painfull in case of problem. Have you try first with kmix to set the volume? Can you play a midi file? Do you get the sytem's sounds? What is your modules.conf? Dominique David Johanson wrote:
On my recent install of SuSE 8, I can't hear my audio CDs. The drive is recognized, a SCSI Plextor Plexwriter 12/4/32 (it works perfectly under 7.1), will read data CDs as well as audio Cds, but I get no sound output.
Under 7.1 I had to install the oss drivers to get sound but when I tried that with 8 I get the following report:
"linux:/home/dcjohan/oss # ./oss-install Checking for any previously installed sound drivers... *** Sound driver is already running - trying to unload it ***
You appear to have the the kernel level sound driver installed as a loadable module. Unload it by executing rmmod sound and try installing OSS/Linux again.
If this error repeats again you probably have the sound driver being loaded automagically by the kerneld daemon. In this case you should remove all sound.o files from all subdirectories of /lib/modules in addition to executing rmmod sound. After that you probably should reboot the system before trying to install OSS again. Edit /etc/modules.conf and remove the 'alias sound ...' line in case it exist and replace it by 'alias sound off'.
Also add a line containing 'alias char-major-14 off' to /etc/modules.conf. Am I allowed to do these changes automatically for you (Y/N) ?"
This has me confused as I'm reading this to mean the the oss drivers are already installed. Am I correct? Should I allow the auto configuration and try the install again or am I missing something obvious?
Permissions on the drive are 764. I have the start aRts soundserver on KDE startup checked. I have the run soundserver with real time priority box checked.
All suggestions greatly appreciated.
