**I'm running Qtopia, the Zaurus **environment, on my laptop and my desktop for access and development which is **really cool.
please, James, tell me how on earth you got qtopia desktop to run? ( or are you using it on w32 OS ???? ) I've yet to convince it to run on Suse ( Got the more recent DLds and all but to no avail... and , right now I'm stuck on a little "monorail" cellery box that is a "just in case" sort of thing... Since my main box has had the HD die AGAIN, and w/o warning , I lost all of that days messages etc... Even if I'd been doing a backup nightly it wouldn't have helped, as it craoked shortly after I began working that day <heavy sigh>
I tried using Qtopia desktop but it has a specific IP address hard-coded in it. That makes it unusable for me. Here's what I did: - - Installed the Qtopia environment from ftp://ftp.trolltech.com/qtopia/qtopia-free-1.5.0-1.i386.rpm - - Made a little script called 'qpe' and made an icon for it on my desktop: export QPEDIR=/opt/Qtopia export QTDIR=/opt/Qtopia export PATH=/opt/Qtopia/bin:/opt/Qtopia/bin:$PATH export TMAKEPATH=/opt/Qtopia/tmake/lib/qws/linux-generic-g++ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/Qtopia/lib qvfb & sleep 1 qpe - - Created a directory called Qtopia in my home directory to sync the Zaurus with - - scp'ed the contents of '/home/root' to that directory - - Made some links for the local Qtopia installation: for i in Applications Documents Settings ; do ln -s $HOME/Qtopia/$i $HOME/$i done Now when I run the 'qpe' script I get a window that looks like a Zaurus and I can access all of my data. You can also grab the source for any Zaurus program you use and compile it to run under this. I haven't set up CVS yet, but once I have it all working reliably, I'll put up a page with full instructions.
Anyway, that is question 1 ... Question 2 is, **http://www.zauruszone.com/
returns a " I can't find it" sort of browser message So I was wondering if there is soemthing mis-typed? ( Galeon Browser=Mozilla w/ o the "let me do everything" apps . Email, composer , and gawd knows what else they have weighed the Mozilla/Netscape family down w/) I know some have said it needs a Gnome environment to run, but I've got it running on KDE ... THo bits of Gnome were installed, I've never even tried to use it...
It works fine here. I copied and pasted it.
I have looked at SOme of the Tkc apps on "Handango.com" ?? The place Sharpusa sends one to get downloaded apps... So I am glad to hear you like them Oh yeah, one other thing, for reasons I can't even come close to understanding Suse8.0 ( all current updates as of yesterday ) Has designated the Zaurus a modem!! ( USB modem, now That sounds like trouble just looking for a place to start!!) Anyway , I'd be interested to see what your setup IDed it as.. I love my Zaurus, but I'm going to get an ethernet card to sync w/ my network stuff, USB is too flakey ( Even in the Redmond OS) AND TOO SLOW!! TIA
You have to patch the SuSE 8 kernel to get the USB working properly. I did it and decided that it wasn't worth it. I bought a Hawking 10M ethernet card and a Linksys wireless card to connect to various networks at work and home and I'm much happier, even though I have to Dremel off the plastic on one side of the wireless card to get my stylus to fit... Another good thing about the Zaurus is that it has NFS support. I can mount the music directory off my laptop using the wireless card and walk around using the Zaurus as an MP3 player.
