Why use more powerfull hardware ? Because for gateways/firewalls a Pentium with 64 of RAM is MUCH MORE than enough hardware !! Why don't use the Suse Firewall on a CD ? Because I'm in Brasil !! Third world with all the rest of the "first" world in crisis , anyone here can afford U$1000,00 just to build a simple gateway/firewall !!! A hardware based gateway/firewall ( like Linksys,Dlink ) is about U$100,00 here !! To a complete corporate file/email server maybe, but NOT for this ! Like someone in the list told me, I DON'T have time to compile kernels or make a "tweeking" time waste config .
If all you want is a firewall, I would recommend IPCop (http://ipcop.sourceforge.net). It is much smaller than SuSE, installs very quickly, and requires minimal configuration effort. Once you're familiar with the interface (you seem to be saying that you are installing lots of firewall systems for clients), a 10-minute install from inserting the CD to a fully-functional system is perfectly feasible. Admin is via a web (http or https) interface, but it also supports SSH, so you could encrypt the http connection over an SSH connection if you prefer. -- David Smith | Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 Home: +44 (0)1454 616963 STMicroelectronics | Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 Mobile: +44 (0)7932 642724 1000 Aztec West | TINA: 065 2380 GPG Key: 0xF13192F2 Almondsbury | Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com BRISTOL, BS32 4SQ | Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk
