Basically, forget it. Until recently, I used a Direcway satellite setup and there is absolutely no way to use those modems with Linux. There are several threads on this issue in the DSL Reports satellite forum (just go to www.dslreports.com, select forums, then Satellite and do a search on Linux).
I took a look at this. Not much hope eh? Sigh. I wish people would not be so hung up on one OS. I asked the guys who set this up what they do when they run up against a customer that doesn't use Windows... as in a Mac, or Linux etc. They looked at me like I had two heads. You mean there is anything but Windows. Sadly this satellite thing is the ONLY option where my brother is living/working. The next best is a noisy telephone line that sometimes connects as fast as 33.6k. Ooooh ahhhh.
There is a company that sells a system for Linux use but it is based on kernel 2.2 (RedHat 6.2 based I believe). You'll find information about them in the satellite forum as well.
One of the replies was about this.. the Helius router is probably the one you were thinking of. From what I read it seems to do the job. Now... is it cost effective? Something my brother will have to decide.
When I was using DPC, I set up a minimal Win2K box to use ICS with. ICS works okay with Linux but the pain of course is having to setup a Windows box to use it.
This is how they have it working right now. They want to avoid Windows if at all possible though. The cost of a Windows2000 Server is too high, and the maintenance is much more than they want to deal with either. In other words, they are trying to avoid Windows servers at all costs, but still have broadband access to the web. Thanks to all the suggestions and info. Gave us something to work with. C.
