Did a first time install of SuSE 8 this week and noted a few unusual setting on the desktop after the install was completed. The box has a CDRW, a DVD, a Zip250, and one floppy. Across the top of the screen are a number of icons including one called CD-R. It is identified in fstab as /dev/cdrecorder and will mount and read data CDs but not play music CDs. Down the left side are icons for the zip drive, two for the floppy called floppy and floppy2, an additional CD icon labeled CD-ROM, and one called CDVD-ROM. The floppy icon points to the line in fstab /dev/sda4 /media/sda4 and does not work. The icon labeled floppy 2 points to the line /dev/fd0 and works as it should. The DVD icon points to the line /dev/dvd which reads CD and DVD data but won't recognize or play music. The icon labeled CD-ROM points to the line /dev/cdrom and it doesn't want to do anything. The zip icon points to /dev/sda4 and it doesn't recognize the zip. No CD device will play music. I've included the fstab file written at install below as well as the one from my home machine on which everything save the 5.25 floppy drive runs fine. I'm requesting help in getting this mess fixed. And I'm curious as to why there were additional pieces of hardware written out to both fstab and the desktop. For the record I've removed the floppy icon, renamed floppy2 to floppy and it works fine. I've rewritten the zip drive line to look like that in my home system but that didn't do any good. The new 8 (work) is on a single drive shared with an win 2000 partition while the Ver 7.1 (home) is on its own drive. fstab from new install of Ver 8 /dev/hde6 / reiserfs defaults 1 2 /dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0 /dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto, user, sync 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs noauto 0 0 /dev/hde1 /windows/C ntfs ro,noauto,user,umask=022 0 0 /dev/sda4 /media/zip auto noauto, user 0 0 /dev/hde5 swap swap pri=42 0 0 /dev/sda4 /media/sda4 auto noauto, user, exec 0 0 #HOTPLUG B3Fu.mwRhlh2Z2_7 fstab on home system of Ver 7.1 with working zip /dev/sdb3 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/sdb1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/cd-rw /cd-rw auto rw,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/dvd /dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto, user 0 0 /dev/fd1 /floppyold auto noauto, user 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/sda1 /windows/C vfat noauto, user 0 0 /dev/sdb2 swap swap defaults 0 2 /dev/hdc4 /zip vfat noauto, user, exec 0 0 /dev/hde1 /hardcard auto rw,noauto, user, exec 0 0 all advice greatly appreciated. dave -- David C.
