Well, I'm with Tiscali since a while, and after exchanging user name and password, they come with one of these prompts, varying from one day to another:

Wvdial recognizes the last two, but not the first one. A way to get around this, is setting "Stupid Mode = 1" in /etc/wvdial.conf, which in fact means that Pap/Chap authentication is turned on.

Thanks everyone who helped. The answer was Stupid Mode= 1. I've also put in a new external modem, but am not sure if that was necessary or not. In any case I've opened up the thing and tried it with a windows box to check that the connection worked ok as the wvdial.conf script didnt' go anywhere. I'd tried stupidmode= 1, StupidMode= 1, etc but didn't try the correct version of Stupid Mode=1 (ie a space between the words) as I thought it would need to be oneWord. Anyways, we're now one happy family again, and everyone can surf from their own box! Cheers, Bruce Dr. Bruce A.
