you shouldnt have to configure samba for the linux client. you would only need to do that if you were mounting a linux file share from the windows 2000 server. make sure your kernel supports the smbfs filesystem and make sure you dont have a firewall on either machine protecting ports 137,138, & 139 (tcp and udp)
also, make sure the username and password are correct
Well, yesterday at home I couldn't test it, but it is exactly like I thought: I have added workgroup=<my workgroup> to /etc/samba/smb.conf to make the mount work. This morning I have commented it out and I get exactly the same error as Christoph Ruepprich, so aparently the smbmount program 'is' using smb.conf. I found an alternative that works for me: 'man smbmount' mentions that you can add the workgroup in the mount command, so that it becomes: mount -t smbfs -o username=win2kuser,password=win2kpassword,workgroup=win2kworkgroup //WIN2KNAME/WIN2KShare /mnt -- mja
