Could I be right in assuming that my modem ISA type, Mr. Modem whose manual only mentions w95 and NT, is no longer up to scratch and doesn't speak the protocols of the new modems at the ISP?
More likely (IMHO) is your ISP screwed up the installation of their new modem banks ;-) See if you can borrow an external modem from someone and try it with that before shelling out for a new one...
Assuming this is the case, who out there has suggestions about modems that work with Suse 7.3 and UK ISPs. I'm currently with Tiscali/World Online/Screaming.Net.
If it comes to this, I used the Diamond SupraExpress 56e until I got DSL, I should imagine it's still on the market, and it's a nice blue colour (cos let's be honest - the colour matters, right?) If BT have upgraded your exchange, go for DSL instead, you won't regret it, and you can get a PCI ADSL modem that works with Linux from dabs.com for under 50 quid apparently, although I got the Alcatel Frog, and that works a treat with the drivers from speedtouch.sf.net (and it looks way cool) -- James Ogley, Unix Systems Administrator, Pinnacle Insurance Plc james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk www.pinnacle.co.uk +44 (0) 20 8731 3619 Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.0) Updated GNOME RPMs for SuSE Linux: www.usr-local-bin.org ********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY.This e-mail and any attachments are confidential and may also be privileged.
