I see you're point. I will experiment with this and see how things go. I may have problems viewing some web pages in 800x600. If I can get good control over fonts I can increase the resolution, but some of them refuse to change, even using the Control Centre. Screen resolution can be changed in the "Graphics card and monitor" module of YaST2 or in SaX2.
You probably want to decrease the resolution from 1024x768 to 800x600 to enlarge letters on the screen. In this case, I would rather change font sizes (e.g. in the KDE Control Center, ...) than to switch to 800x600. I've heard complaints about applications opening windows which can't fit into the 800x600 resolution. It's annoying to move these windows to access all their buttons.
