Greetings All: Normally the compiler, GCC, and linker should be installed as part of the OS install in Linux. I am assuming here that you are asking how to compile and install something like ALSA Sound drivers or some other application take would be downloaded as a "TAR Ball" . After extracting the source files into their own directory. You should look for a readme file this will contain specific instructions for the application you are trying to compile. Normally this readme file will have three steps: In a Xterm window, cd into directory the sources are extracted into and run the ./configure batch to configure the makefile to compile the application on your system. This batch should also check to see if the necessary libraries are installed etc. In a Xterm window, cd into directory the sources are extracted into and run the make command at the command prompt. This will compile the application. In a Xterm window, cd into directory the sources are extracted into and run the "make install" command at the command prompt. This will install the application into the default directories the developer decided the application should go into. If you are wanting to find out how develop code, I suggest purchasing some books on GNU C++ and Linux development. QUE Press has a good one called GNU C++ for Linux. SAMS Press also has several good titles in their Teach Yourself Series. Hi,
I have (so far) only installed from RPM ... can anyone tell me (in fairly basic terms) what I need to compile a program from source? Presumably I need a compiler ... then what?
