I am preparing to install netatalk on my system and want to configure my second Ethernet card with YAST 2 (SuSE 7.3 Pro). This card will be used for local network only, so that my PB 1400 can connect to my SuSE box. In all Mac documentation I have seen, it is recommended that IP addresses be in the 169.x.y range, where x and y are numbers between 0 and 255. Furthermore, subnet masks are recommended to be 255.255.0.0 When I try to use an IP address of 169.254.101.1, YAST 2 will not accept it. Should I follow the info in the side bar and try something in the 192.168.x..y range? Will this work with Macs connecting via netatalk? I am not going to install the netatalk package before I get this straightened out and therefore don't have the documentation yet. Besides, experience is often a better guide than man pages, imho.
Don't worry, is more simple than you think . My home gateway is a 486 DX4 100 with 48 MB of RAM, 2 Gb SCSI and 3 3COM cards, one connected to my cable modem ( Ajato Brasil fully DHCP no suport for Linux but fully fuctional ;- ) ), the second is conected in a mini 4 port hub to conect my worksation and any machine from my clients ( I'm work as Suport Mananger for some Publicity Agency ) and the third is conected to my Power Mac 9600, in this board I'm setup the appletalk protocol, my gateway runs Suse 7.2, with IPTables and FW2 from Suse 7.3, DHCP server to all internal cards, named just for comodity, ProFTP on internal and external cards, my IPs ? 192.168.1.1 .... in first card 192.168.2.1 .... in the second card, no problems, works fine at first ! on the MAC all auto IP , gateway and DNS . All this documents you have read is the "Apple Way" , but not the Only Way ! Fábio Rabelo
