I'm partial towards Mutt, but I'd like some thoughts about options regarding the 'surrounding' MDA/MTA apps.
Or if someone could point me to a summary of which apps do what/how... Like 'natural' combinations of: fetchmail+formail/procmail/+postfix/sendmail ...or something.
What I use is postfix + fetchmail + procmail + mutt. This is the best combination of programs for me in a mail environment. postfix - mail transfer agent (replaces sendmail) fetchmail - downloads mail from multiple servers and delivers to postfix procmail - MDA, filters and delivers mail to mail boxes mutt - the ultimate console MUA for mail power users ;) I actually have procmail take over mail delivery through the .forward file. You can easily configure postfix to use procmail for ALL local mail delivery, but I am the only one using my laptop. Fetchmail can be run in daemon mode, or through cron which is how I run it.
