Here is the WEIRD Part: This same machine works perfectly OK when I boot
from the 7.2 CD !!
This seems to involve the SCSI module for the Adaptec 2940 UW . Is this a
real bug? This sounds suspiciously like the problem I ran into just a few hours ago. I was reinstalling 7.1 because there were some major hardware changes including new SCSI drive. I have the Adaptec 29160 and noticed the freeze early in the install process, I think at the same point that you mentioned but I am not sure now. While it was frozen, my boss came to talk to me so I was distracted for several minutes. When I got back to my computer I saw that it finally got past that point and went through the rest of the install except for rebooting the computer after all installation and setup were complete. Try just leaving your computer alone at that point for several minutes and see if it works.
My system has an AIC-7899. It hung during install and I let it sit overnight. It was still stuck in the morning, so time does not seem to heal this wound. Chris Houghton
