Hey,
We're ordering a large system, and I'm not sure how to calculate how much space is "lost" to redundancy on a RAID 5 system.
Does that make sense?
i.e. if you order five 18GB drives, you don't get 90GB of space, because some of it is used up for redundancy -- you lose x amount of GB.... so how do you figure out "x" ?
Generally you loose 1/3 of the available storage (1 drive in 3) - I'd go for 6 drives. BTW, I'm installing SuSE 8.0 (when it gets to Australia) on a Compaq box with QUAD 1GHz Xeon processors, 4Gb RAM and 16 x 36Gb drives in RAID 5 - more as a proof of concept, because the sucker has to have NT on it eventually...:-(
