In an effort to get my cd-rom and cd-rw working with my 7.3 system, I feel I have completely lost all sense of what is what. This means I've tried so many things that I feel I've completely jacked up everything relating to the cd-xx and don't know how to get back to it's original state. Adding scsi-ide here, linking multiple mounts there, adding lines here, etc...
How can I start over?? Is there something I can delete and start from scratch?
Thanks, Tom
Hi Tom,
Well, basically, your drives are, let's say primary master (hdc:cd-rom) and primary slave (hdd:cd-rw), and IDE drives. This is only an assumption, they might be SCSI drives, they might be jumpered differently, and then everything is different. In that case, your /etc/fstab should contain lines like:
/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/cdrecorder should be a link to /dev/sr0, /dev/cdrom should be a link to /dev/hdc, and you should have SCSI emulation for hdd. To ensure this, you need the line: alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi In your /etc/modules.conf and the append line in lilo reading hdd=ide-scsi, which you can check with YaST1 (System Admin.->Kernel and boot conf.-> LILO config.)
If you are really clueless, then do a clean install and let YaST2 do everything itself, then it should turn out right. SuSE 7.3 has automatic setup for CD-RW
