It might have to do with the fact, that DISPLAY is set to ":0.0" , However I
Wild guess: You are logged in as a "normal" user open a term and made su -
the $DISPLAY variable is okay, but you have to allow other user (in that case root) to use the Display.
open another term and type:
xhost +localhost
then it should work
