I've installed the newest two OS from SuSE and Mandrake, and have tried 5 different modems with them, including a US Robotics 5686d, still no modem.
Question: is dialup simple and successful on the same line, same phone number, same rest of config with Windows/Mac? If the answer is yes, then try kppp, which will be around if you installed the KDE stuff (either distro). It has a setup screen much like you might find on Windows/Mac. Fill in the basic stuff, and leave the 'device' stuff alone, except for setting the baud rate. The 'wizard' for setting stuff up is nice, but try the manual version too, if wizard doesn't work. Do not muck with the 'Authentication', 'pppd arguments', 'login script', 'execute' or 'accounting' until you have gotten 1 account working. (touching those only succeded in ruining a perfectly good account for me...) Never had a failure in 2 years with that software (earthlink account). Should take you all of 7 minutes, if you have your account info handy. Best of luck. Michael -- Michael Fischer 7.5 million years to run michael@visv.net printf "%d", 0x2a; -- deep thought
