Thanks for the suggestions, it was indeed bios related.
Figured it out. I have to use LBA (logical block addressing) for this
drive in the bios. I had to re-install, but that was ok. It's booting
properly now.

I suspect that the problem is related to the bios settings on the motherboard, which is currently set to autodetect the hard drive. I have read everything I could find on the web and in the manuals regarding LILO and booting, but I can't find anything that addresses this specific issue.
