I had experienced the same problem with Matrox Millenum G200 and the workaround with "vga=normal" was recommended to me by SuSE support. It worked in my case (XFree86 Version 4.1.0, k_deflt-2.4.7-16). See also http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/matrox450_72.html.
