yes, its dynamically assigned. the server sends back the port to connect to to the client which then sends all ftp requests through that port. port 21 is only used for the initial connection. if the client were the one making the outgoing request for a different port, this would not be a problem. i believe there is a type of ftp proxy you can try to use. So is that 2nd port dynamically assigned?

ftp uses two ports, one is port 21 and the other port is set after the client initates the connection. thats why you are having some problems. it generally doesnt work to try and port forward ftp connections.

I'm running 7.1 Professional at home with static IP address. When I ftp in, this is part of the welcome message:
FTP server (Version 6.5/OpenBSD, linux port 0.3.2)
The problem is that it hangs after logging in.
230 User user logged in. TYPE I 200 Type set to I. PWD 257 "/home/user" is current directory. PASV
Then nothing. Never retrieves the directory listing or anything else. I've tried the command line ftp client as well as gFTP 2.0.8, and both exhibit the same problem.
The server is sitting behind a Linksys dsl/cable router, and obviously the ftp port is open. Any suggestions? This is very, very frustrating. It used to work with no problems at all. But then it started doing this . . . .
