You should only need to write zero's to the first 512 bytes or so, perhaps
1024 (anybody know exactly where the partition table is stored).

Weird stuff. I went ahead and upgraded one of my machine's BIOS' to recognize 40+ gig drives. I then got access to the 45 gig drive via dlgdiag.exe program from WDC. I wrote out zeros onto the drive which
five hours.
I tried mkreiserfs /dev/hdb again and it worked. I also tried writing a partition table to the drive and deleting it again and repeating my trial and it worked again. Not sure why I had such trouble at first. I guess
dlgdiag program is worth something to clean up a drive and reiser is
lasted that pickier
than ext2.
Thanks,
mk

once you have a disk with partitions you clean it up, create file system and mount it:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<disk> bs=1024 count=1024 mke2fs /dev/<disk> mount /dev/<disk> /mnt
My problem is I can do: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<disk> bs=1024 count=1024
BUT mkreiserfs /dev/<disk>
errors....

I don't believe it. I have a machine here which has the following df:
/dev/hda1 / reiserfs /dev/hdb /usr/local/ftp/pub ext2
The drive was a new drive (hdb) and never had a partition table on it. I figure new drives can be turned into partition less drives but once you got a table written you must use one unless you low level format it again? I never had a partition table on this hdb drive and had it as well once in reiserfs format so it must work.
Na! You can't have a partition on a physical disk. There has to be either primary or extended partiton/logical drives.
If you think I'm wrong, tell us how you do it?
