what is the advantage of running nis client on a nis server
If you want to use netgroups, they are only available via NIS - there is no non-NIS equivalent. Also, in order to separate out the NIS user accounts and local user accounts into two files /etc/passwd and /etc/passwd.nis. The NIS password map only contains /etc/passwd.nis and so only those accounts are available across the domain, however the server still needs to reference these accounts so needs to be running as an NIS client too. -- Simon Oliver
