fsck ( = FileSystem ChecK) is what you want. Assuming your filesystem is ext2, the actual app will be either e2fsck or fsck.ext2 (varies by distribution and version). Normally, you want to fsck only unmounted filesystems, and I don`t offhand recall how to deal with the root filesystem in this regard (other than the obvious option of booting with a rescue disk and running e2fsck from it on the now-unmounted root filesystem). And yes, it`s probably a bad block on the hard drive.
