One strace later and the problem is solved. When I installed the latest nVidia rpm (build 1251), the /usr/lib/libGL.so symlink was never updated. Don't ask me how I still could play hg2, but I could. It still pointed to the now nonexisting .769 (or what it was). ld, however, couldn't open libGL.so, so opened libGL.a instead, a file provided by mesadev (why would a dev package contain binaries anyway.
