Just so I don't leave everybody hanging on this issue, here's what I've done so far. I put my ATI Expert 98 8MB AGP card back in. I have two installations of 7.1 and one installation of Win Me on my box, so I can play with one of the 7.1 installations to try to get the Expert 2000 AGP card working. The only kicker is that everytime I want to test it I have to shut down and physically change out the card. But that only takes a few minutes. I also have downloaded all the files for XFree4.1.0 and Sax2 from the SuSE ftp site. I think I will try installing those on one of the 7.1 installations to see how it goes. Then test it with the Expert 2000 card. Anybody got any other suggestions before I screw things up?
I'm going to mention what I had to do to get my MGA G450 working in case you run into trouble. I couldn't compile the kernel modules under Linux-2.4.4-SuSE. You need to be able to do this in order to get 3d working properly. I downloaded Linux-2.4.5, which wouldn't compile so I patched it with 2.4.6-pre1. That compiled. I followed the instructions in SuSE's README for X 4.1.0 to install the modules. The improvement is substantial. I was playing Soldier of Fortune with all of the details on maximum on my K6-2/400 where I had to severely turn them down under X 4.0.3 with the Matrox beta 1.3.0 driver. Generally, it was as smooth as could be. It slowed down every minute, but that's probably due to the 1-minute cron job I'm running :-)* Unfortunately, OSS wouldn't work with the shiny new kernel I compiled so I installed the open-source Aureal driver. I haven't tried to play a game yet with it (it was late last night) but last time I installed it SDL games wouldn't work properly. Maybe the new kernel is happier... I'll find out later. - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE7L0uv+FOexA3koIgRAqwiAKCQFoLY4aPzUhKBU81VEdufgANslQCgmHaL QYAFVNazDTMioPgPiwxXIro= =t+Yv -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
