      OK, I now have an explanation but not an answer of what is going on.   Both of the
following:

    xdm -debug=1
    kdm -nodaemon

produced this error message:

    error while loading shared libs: undefined symbol: XdmcpWrapperToOddParity

So the NVidia angle was misleading.   But the question remains: what shared library am
I missing, and where can I retrieve it?   I installed XFree 4.0.3 using the Xinstall.sh
script; could that be the problem?
