Did you post your suse version? I have problems with KDE 2.1.x under 7.0. The order on which you install the RPMs or what RPMs you install results in a non-functional KDE.
I'm running SuSE 7.1. KDE itself seems to be running fine; it's only KDM that doesn't work. I believe it's possible to use KDM without using anything else from KDE, and it's certainly possible to use KDE without KDM (I'm doing that at this very moment, out of necessity).
You should try to start kdm through the command line. If you are under 7.0 use 'init 2', if under 7.1 use 'init 3' to get to the console. At the prompt, as root, type '/opt/kde2/bin/kdm' and see what if any error messages you get.
I tried that and got an immediate return with no messages of any kind. I believe that /etc/init.d/xdm does the same thing. Paul Abrahams
