I can't seem to find it in the book right now, but when I was trying to get alsasound working on my system (I gave up for now...), I believe I saw a note that the user had to be a member of a special 'audio' or 'sound' group, in order to have access to the audio devices. Check /etc/groups and the permissions on your device files for
