Hi Torsten, I am getting ready to try your instructions, step by step. I want to provide you feedback as to what I actually do, and how it works for me. This is not a request for further help (especially because I don't even know if I will need it when I'm done.) It is only meant to inform you of how things went for me. 1) I am working with the 2.4.2_default kernel from the ftp site. SB64 Gold AWE. (nice card, when it works.) 2) I had downloaded and compiled the latest ALSA lib files from the ALSA site. Fortunately there was an uninstall option in the makefile (this time,) so I ran that. 3) Went into YaST1 and selected R for alsa and ran the (re)install. 4) xemacs /etc/modules.conf Whoops! Didn't realize I'd get that. Guess I should pay more attention alias char-major-14 off alias sound off alias midi off alias sound-slot-0 off alias sound-service-0-0 off alias sound-service-0-1 off alias sound-service-0-3 off alias sound-service-0-8 off alias sound-service-0-11 off alias sound-service-0-12 off alias sound-slot-1 off alias sound-service-1-0 off alias sound-service-1-1 off alias sound-service-1-3 off alias sound-service-1-8 off alias sound-service-1-11 off alias sound-service-1-12 off alias sound-slot-2 off alias sound-service-2-0 off alias sound-service-2-1 off alias sound-service-2-3 off alias sound-service-2-8 off alias sound-service-2-11 off alias sound-service-2-12 off alias sound-slot-3 off alias sound-service-3-0 off alias sound-service-3-1 off alias sound-service-3-3 off alias sound-service-3-8 off alias sound-service-3-11 off alias sound-service-3-12 off alias char-major-116 off alias snd-card-0 off alias snd-card-1 off alias snd-card-2 off alias snd-card-3 off alias snd-card-4 off 5) Delete all of the above. I may not need/want to delet the first three lines, but here goes. And the alias char-major-116 off also bothers me but it's gone. 6) Scan through all the commented ALSA stuff in modules.conf looking for something that isn't commented. Nothing found. 7) I had already deleted previous stuff at the end of modules.conf so this is what I found and deleted: # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. --- # --- ALSACONF verion 0.5.9 --- alias char-major-116 snd options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 snd_device_mode=0660 snd_device_gid=17 snd_device_uid=0 # post-install snd alsactl restore # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. --- 8) Save modules.conf C-x C-s and C-x C-c out of XEmacs. I've got a backup around here somewhere...I think? 9) lsmod gibt mir keine Sound Modules. (rcalsasound stop didn't need to be run in my case, but I did it just to be safe.) Yes, I know I'm out of sequence, but that shouldn't matter up to this point. 10) nothing in the sound section of /var/lib/YaST/unique.inf, but it's nice to know it's there. 11) Running YaST2 - Hmmm, no sound when I test, and I notice this in the system console: (the repeats are from moving the volume slider) Mar 9 17:13:09 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:09 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:09 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:09 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:09 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:09 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:10 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:11 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:11 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:11 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:11 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:11 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:12 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:12 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-1 Mar 9 17:13:12 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:12 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-2 Mar 9 17:13:12 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 Mar 9 17:13:12 nariana modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module snd-card-3 12) quit out of YaST2 without saving. I will investigate further. I'm also posing to the mailing list to see if some of the other's there have some idea of what else can be done. If I figure it out, I'll let you know. WAIT A MINUTE! HOLD THE PRESSES! I, uh, didn't follow the instructions.
