does anyone know of a good set of online tutorials that teach the ins and outs of using tar with tape drives. I'm interested specifically in things like incremental backups, selective restore, etc. the tar man pages, though comprehensive, are not exactly user-friendly in describing the uses for all those modifier commands. Also, a question - I've been backing up a directory that is shared with a Mac via netatalk. When I back up the directory, I notice all the .appledouble directories going with the files. Do the .appledouble files contain resource fork info for use with the MacOS, which is why they are invisible when the dir is viewed from the mac? What is the ramification of backing up these files to tape, then restore? Do the .appledouble files need to be copied as well or the files will lose their resource fork info and the MacOS will no longer be able to identify them as belonging to a certain program/creator?
