I had the exact same error. It's because you have chosen the wrong CPU in processor type. What do you have?

All required packages described in Documentation/changes are installed. To be shure not to have a misconfigurated linux i made also a new installation with base,network, development packages and all the updates I need for 2.4 kernel. I feel a little bit desperated... Help would be nice...
