If you have a tape(s) big enough to contain a complete partition then I would recommend using a rescue boot flop to backup and restore. That would probably be the most easy, comfortable and fastest way:
As long as you don't use the -z option (compress) then the --multi-volume option will let you use multiple tapes. There are even dump levels to tar just as with dump. Hail gnu tar.... -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com
