Is there a SuSE-specific sequence necessary to install a new kernel? If so, is it documented anywhere?
First, I tried to install the 2.2.16 kernel from the SuSE mirror at ftp.twoguys.org:/suse/update/6.4/kernel-2.2.16/k_smp.rpm . The update succeeded, but when I boot that kernel, the initrd *seems* to be corrupt, as it cannot find my SCSI modules, and the boot hangs with VFS: cannot open root device 08:01.
It sounds like you took all the apropriate steps. Maybe the kernel you downloaded was corrupted. Also did you do a "lilo" before trying to reboot the new kernel; then a "depmod -a" after rebooting?
