my sister was given an AST Advantage 621 computer. (broken of course) it is a P75 w/8mb RAM, the "official" model # is 501692-001. the hard drive (samsung 850mb) is bad..... i put a drive that had DOS 5 on it in the machine but it won't boot... I get a message in German....."Kein System oder Laufwerksfehler Wechseln und Taste druchen" which i think says there is no system installed and you must change something? the CMOS has a setting to change what PNP OS is booted.....this was set for W95 and the other options were "other" or "none". I have tried both the "other" and the "none" but it still won't boot from the HD. I can boot the machine from a DOS floppy and then switch to the DOS HD. i can then run any DOS programs i want. anyone have any experience with these machines?

Donald, have to checked to make sure the two hidden system files are on the hard drive. If you did a format \sys on the hard drive from a bootable floppy they should be there, but may not hurt to check. Will not boot without them. Not sure if it was AST or not, but seems from way back I remember that one of the computers needed a floppy made for that computer to make the hard disk bootable. Don't quote me on that as it's only a vague memory. :) Nevada -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
