As SuSE 6.4 does have more than one choice of boot manager (lilo and choos), make install will not copy the boot file to the /boot directory. You will need to do it manually and then run lilo. When you install the kernel.rpm, it also creates a file in /boot, calls kernel.config, which is the .config file you need to compile. Copy it to /usr/src/linux and when you do a make menuconfig, it will work.
Or just edit the Makefile to put the new kernel image in /boot, and do: make menuconfig --> customize the kernel make dep make clean make bzlilo (which will compile the kernel and automatically run LILO) make moduls make modules_install.
To configure sound and network, use the YaST2, and it shoud work.
