Well gary. I'am not a wizzard, but the operation system is called Linux, so everything would be possible, wouldn't it? I have tried such thing over a telephone line. I did this with vnc. This consist out of to parts, the vnc server, and the client. The big fun with this is, you can use your browser to explore the remote desktop!!! This is accomplised with JAVA. This is really cool. Over a phone line, it is too slow to work with it. I only have a 22k8 modem. I think ISDN/ADSL/cable would make it really work.. I have experimented with my 127.0.0.1 loopback port, and this went great, but you could see it is a little bit slower. You could even get a real (dedicated) viewer. There are viewers for Linux/WIndows/Mac. A good place to start is at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/start.html All you got to know is the IP number, but if you read the documentation, you should make a succes. Otherwise you can mail of course :-)
:-)
Thanks, Alex; vnc is definitely on my list. First, I want to see if I can do this with the existing X utils. ...
gary
Mybe I can alter another question/suggestion. The X-server runs on port 6000. Would it be possible to "intercept" the data stream, eg from a computer attached to the www? Also, I know you can compress the X data stream, so there is fewer data to boost over the phone line > > > --
