Vmware runs setuid as root, which means it takes full root priviledges as it runs. It can do anything it likes, and so crashes that much harder when it goes down. It's crashed my machine a few times. Are you starting vmware with a preconfigured virtual machine? If so, it's possible that the files have become corrupted. Does vmware start OK if you don't load a virtual machine config file? If so that just about confirms your problem. I trust you have a functioning backup?
I have a strange problem with VMWARE. I'm runnning SuSE 6.4 with all standard packages except for the xshared packaged which I downloaded from SuSE to cure the Netscape crashing problem. Now, every time I do click Power On in VMWARE the whole machine freezes, and I have to switch off, with the compulsory fsck at reboot on all partitions. I've never seen Linux, or any Unix, freeze like this. Any ideas?
