i'm a new bebie in linux. i want install the tar and rpm files that i've downloaded from net. i know few..and seems that it didn't really work. i need your help. i'm dying here:) these are the things i do to install a tar file:
tar xvfz file ./configure mmake make install
..these are the things i do... but i couldn't make the file work.
It will probably be more like this tar xvfz file.tar.gz (this uncompresses and untars the file (ussually into a directory of the program name)) After you ungzip/untar it cd into the directory it created and look at the INSTALL and README files with any text editor (vi, pico, gedit, word prefect) or with the `more` or `less` commands If the README and INSTALL files don't give any more information, try this ./configure make This should compile the program, if it doesn't work, post a message with the errors to say the programs mailing list or even here. Make sure you copy and past any error messages. If it does work try this next step u passwd: roots_password make install This should install the program, if it doesn't work, post a message with the errors to say the programs mailing list or even here. Make sure you copy and past any error messages Also this is a really good document for installing software on linux, check out: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/guides71/en/mdkrefguide/install-free.html
wwhat additional things that i need to do..and is there an easier way to do that:)
A lot of people find rpm packages a little easier to use (this is debatable), try looking for a rpm package for the program you want (some don't have em) and try u password: roots_password rpm -i file.i386.rpm Check the link above, it will also tell you how to do this. I know it is for a differant linux distro (shh, they might kill me for treesen) but the concepts are the same.
..also i want to use the file i installed on my KDE enviroment what i have tto do to make a short cut on my short cut for file as in win98??
right click on the desktop goto -> new -> application type in the application name and hit "ok", this will take you to a window with some tabs, I forget exactly what everything in here is called, but basically the only thing you need to do, is goto the second tab type in the program name, choose an icon (or even use the default) and click OK. It will be on your desktop now, single click on it and enjoy They can explain it better than I can, check out: http://www.kde.org/documentation/faq/kdefaq-6.html#ss6.1 Jack -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
