Thanks a lot to Alvaro Novo, Rik Dunphy and Tochiro for their answers, but I still don't seem to be able to fix it. Yes, I am a member of uucp and dialup. Second, the change does not always happen after changing the configuration (i.e., it does not seem to always be triggered by suseconfig running). And third, I have examined rc.config several times and I don't seem to see what needs to be changed (I do want rc.config to run when I change the setup; what I'd like is it not to change the ttyS1 permissions, if it does). Dear All,
I use wvdial as my PPP dialer. I generally can use it as regular user without any trouble. However, from time to time, and without apparent reason, the system complains saying
ramon@ligarto:~ > wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.40 --> Cannot open /dev/ttyS1: Permission denied
And I am getting tired of having to login as root, and do a chmod to restore the permissions to w for members of the group (yeah, sure, its just a one-liner, but it is annoying anyway). Why is this happening and how can I prevent it? [Note: I am using SuSE 6.3].
Here's my best guess... look into rc.config (through YaST, system administrator menu), it's probably changing your permissions file everytime you run SuSEconfig.
