You are getting the problem because your soundcard isn't installed properly. It isn't a permissions problem. I've got a Live! Value and I got this error because my card wasn't set up correctly. I found an excellent SBLive install site - but I can't find the address. I printed out the web site, so I am trying to fudge together my own SoundBlaster install instructions. If I remember I'll try emailing the instructions when I get home Kev Jackson

Suse 6.4 became available for me to purchase about a week after it was announced for distribution in Europe.
I rushed home from CompUSA and spent the better part of an evening setting it up on a 20 Gb HD. Was I ever pleasantly surprised. Everything went as advertised and installation was fairly easy. That either means that suse had done a good job, I have finally learned something about nix, or all of the above.
I have a SB Live Sound Card. The card set up with the OSS driver and worked fine. I made the "soundon" entry in /sbin/init.d/boot.local and everything worked fine.
I have used Yast and SuSEconfig from time to time and I suspect that something has gone wrong. I no longer have the entry in /sbin/init.d/boot.local. I have no OSS files anywhere on my hard drive and when I try to install the OSS driver I receive a message that I have the kernel configured with a sound driver and OSS can't load. In addition, dmesg says that the driver emu10k1, is loaded but I get no sound.
When I try to open a mixer, any mixer, their all the same response, from the multimedia menu in KDE, I get a message that either says one of two things; Can't open mixer, or you may not have permission (I'm running as root) chmod a+rw. I have written chmod a+rw four times and nothing changes. I reinstalled all of the mixer packages. The permissions are
crw-rw-rw
the owners are; root audio.
What do I have to do to get sound working again besides a reinstall? Any help is appreciated.
TIA
Rusty
