Warning for you who try to build a firewall. Get at least 16MB of RAM. Even if you manage to install SuSE, it's going to be sluggish. Pick up two bars of 4MB at any swap meet and you'll glad you did.
Funny. I've been running OK with 8MB. For almost a year. The machine doesn't do much usually; just masquerading, packet routing and smtp relay. Here's the current finger information: 3:40pm up 19:34, 0 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 Mind you; it's only a 33.6kbps modem so that might have something to do with it. One of the reasons for the kernel rebuild is to remove loads of drivers etc, even the modules to make more space both in RAM and on disk. Hoping to free at least half a meg of RAM. As for being able to buy RAM... not available for that motherboard. A very old motherboard - about 8 years old when a 486-66 was the bee's knees.
I would like to know how to solve the make modules_install problem too. So I'll keep track of this.
BTW: those who've installed the yast.rpm from the web site and had problems with 'manpath', try to force an install of the package from the command line instead.
