My linux box (Suse 6.3) is on LAN with WIN98 machines and I tried to set SAMBA up to share resources. I couldn't manage to make my computer be seen by the others. I had a look at SMB Howto but I didn't find anything useful. Can someone tell me some good online resource to get complete configuration instruction.
Thank you Pierpaolo Da Fieno
Sounds like you forgot to make the share[s] browseable. Check the config. As for online help. If you are not using SWAT to configure that can be a good option. I find it very easy to set up things compared to making config files manually. There is a link next to each option to a help file that gives a lot of information. It gives a lot better overview of things to remember. You enable SWAT by removing the comment before the line in /etc/inetd.conf that begins with "swat". After that fire up your www browser and point it to your hostname:901. You get a login dialog where you login as root. You are then taken to the "frontpage" of SWAT/SAMBA at you local machine. Here you can administer your complete SAMBA setup, as well as find a lot of documentation. Note that SAMBA does not need to be running to start SWAT. -*- brag mode on -*- I set up my machine today to share users directories and a HP970 deskjet to my wife/kids W98 box in less than 30 minutes. It worked first try. All with the help of SWAT. Without SWAT it would not have been that easy. -*- brag mode off -*- Guess what took the longest time? Being forced to find the printer CD from HP and install W98 printer drivers on a machine that already had them installed. After putting the CD in it told me to keep the ones that were installed. Arrgh!!! It's so stupid!!! Ok enought venting for now... One thing to consider if you have a smb.conf file with a lot of info that you have put in it, is that SWAT cleans it out completely and replaces it with a file that contains what is needed and nothing more. So make a copy first, just in case.
